Electrocardiographic, angiographic and clinical picture of acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation caused by simultaneous occlusion of …
2018
Acute myocardial infraction with ST-segment elevation (STEMI) is most often caused by the occlusion of only one large epicardial artery. Simultaneous thrombosis of two or more coronary arteries is a rare cause of STEMI. In this article, the authors present a case of a 56-year-old man with STEMI who was diagnosed with simultaneous occlusion of the right coronary artery and the left anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery
Post-COVID-19 acute sarcopenia : physiopathology and management
2021
AbstractIn this review, we discuss the pathophysiologic and management aspects of acute sarcopenia in relation to SARS-CoV-2 infection. COVID-19 is as a multi-organ infectious disease characterized by a severe inflammatory and highly catabolic status, influencing the deep changes in the body build, especially the amount, structure, and function of skeletal muscles which would amount to acutely developed sarcopenia. Acute sarcopenia may largely impact patients’ in-hospital prognosis as well as the vulnerability to the post-COVID-19 functional and physical deterioration. The individual outcome of the COVID-19 and the degree of muscle mass and functional loss may be influenced by multiple fact…
Laparoscopy in Acute Mesenteric Ischemia
2011
Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a life-threatening vascular disease which often requires emergent surgical treatment. Early diagnosis and immediate intervention to adequately restore the mesenteric blood flow are mandatory to prevent bowel necrosis and patient death. The underlying cause is varied and the prognosis depends on pathologic findings [1, 2].
UPREGULATION OF MIR-29A AND GENOMIC DNA HYPERMETHYLATION IN NORMAL KARYOTYPE AML SHOWING DNMT3A MUTATION UPREGOLAZIONE DEL MIR-29A E IPERMETILAZIONE …
2015
DNMT3A, a member of DNA methyltransferases, is mutated in approximately 22% of de novo normal karyotype acute myeloid leukemia (NK-AML) patients leading to adverse overall survival. The highly recurrent mutation in DNMT3A is a “gain of function-like” at codon R882. To indagate about miRNA signature in NK-AML R882-DNMT3A mutated we studied by qRT-PCR the expression of 384 known human miRNA in 9 selected de-novo AML DNMT3A mutated. We compared miRNA expression data with our previous results obtained in 31 AML DNMT3A wild type (WT) and we focused on a strong up-regulation of miR155, miR29a, miR196b and miR25. We consolidated this data in additional 24 new DNMT3A mutated AML and we confirmed th…
L’ASSISTENZA SANITARIA ALLA POPOLAZIONE ANZIANA IN ITALIA: IL PROGETTO U.L.I.S.S.E. (UN LINK INFORMATICO SUI SERVIZI SANITARI ESISTENTI PER L’ANZIANO)

Health care for older people in Italy: The U.L.I.S.S.E. Project (Un link informatico sui servizi sanitari esistenti per l'anziano - a computerized ne…
2010
OBJECTIVES: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is aimed at describing older patients who are cared for in hospitals, home care or nursing homes in Italy. DESIGN: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is an observational multicenter prospective 1-year study. SETTING: Overall, 23 acute geriatric or internal medicine hospital units, 11 home care services and 31 nursing homes participated in the study. MEASUREMENTS: The patient's evaluation was performed using comprehensive geriatric assessment instruments, i.e. the interRAI Minimum Data Set, while data on service characteristics were recorded using ad-hoc designed questionnaires. RESULTS: The older subjects who are in need of acute and long term care in Italy have simil…

Understanding the Experiences of Heavy Smokers after Exercise
2015
There is now strong evidence that exercise has an acute effect on the urge to smoke and the accompanying withdrawal symptoms. However, the perceptions by heavy smokers of exercise and its relationship to the urge to smoke have not been well documented. The aim of the present study is to understand the experiences of heavy smokers with regard to exercise and its effect on their urge to smoke. Five physically inactive, heavy smokers are asked to abstain from smoking the night before exercising on a cycle ergometer under two conditions (one at medium and one at vigorous intensity done a week apart). Semi-structured, in-depth interviews are conducted after the second exercise session. Thematic …
The Therapeutic Role of SGLT-2 Inhibitors in Acute Heart Failure: From Pathophysiologic Mechanisms to Clinical Evidence with Pooled Analysis of Relev…
2022
(1) Background: Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors constitute a novel drug class with remarkable cardiovascular benefits for patients with chronic heart failure (HF). Recently, this class has been utilized in acute HF as an additional treatment option to classic diuretics, which remain the cornerstone of treatment. (2) Methods: We attempted to identify those pathophysiologic mechanisms targeted by SGLT-2 inhibitors, which could be of benefit to patients with acute HF. We then conducted a comprehensive review of the literature within the PubMed database in order to identify relevant studies, both randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies, assessing the sa…
